Battlefield 2042 has officially been revealed. In a trailer released on Wednesday via the official Battlefield YouTube channel, the latest entry in the long-running military FPS series is coming to PS5, Xbox Series, PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 22nd.
Developed by DICE, Battlefield 2042 is an all multiplayer affair with scale at its core. Returning to the series’ roots, the game promises huge “only in Battlefield” moments with games featuring 128 players on the latest consoles and PCs (last-gen hardware will be capped at 64 players).
It’s a return to the series’ roots, and DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson has made clear his team’s approach:
“ Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want – the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events”
Taking place on the biggest maps in the series’ history — understandable given the player count — “fan favourite” modes like Conquest and Breakthrough return. Taking place across the globe — South Korea, India, Singapore, Qatar and Antarctica — dynamic weather, environmental hazards and “spectacular world events” like tornadoes and sandstorms will do their best to halt your progress.
A new mode, Hazard Zone is described as a “high stakes, squad-based game type” that is “distinctly DICE,” whilst being very different to Conquest or Breakthrough. Alongside this, a further unannounced mode is being developed by DICE LA and will be revealed at EA Play on July 22nd.
In Battlefield 2042, Players will take on the role of Specialists — “an all new type of playable soldier for the franchise” inspired by classic Battlefield classes. Each Specialist will have a fully customisable loadout and will be equipped with their own Specialist Trait and Speciality. As is the norm in Battlefield, players will also have access to a wide range of vehicles and other equipment to use in battle.
Although the game contains no campaign mode, per Polygon, Battlefield 2042 will contain elements of a narrative which will be drip-fed to players through live service and seasonal content. Set in a grim near future amidst the greatest refugee crisis the world has faced famine is rife, and water and energy shortages are all too real. Non-Patriated soldiers — or “Non-Pats” — choose to be on the side of either the USA or Russia as they fight for the future of this very different world.
Battlefield 2042 will get a full gameplay reveal on June 13th.
