Starfield closed the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase on Sunday with fifteen minutes of gameplay detailing exploration, stories, character customisation, and the massive scale of the world before re-confirming the game’s 2023 release window.
Watch the whole presentation, hosted by Bethesda’s Todd Howard below:
Starfield’s incredibly impressive presentation opens with a spacecraft landing on a barren planet before the main character steps out into what appears to be the most graphically impressive and detailed world Bethesda Softworks has created to date. The perspective shifts from first to third person as insect-like enemies scuttle away, and we’re introduced to the game’s mining and eventually combat mechanics.
Gunplay appears to have seen a significant upgrade from a game like Fallout 4, looking much more fluid and akin to a shooter. Bullets fly and the interior environments burst with explosions. There’s no VATS-like targetting system on display here either. Whilst the combat definitely leans more towards that of a first-person shooter, there’s no doubting this is a Bethesda RPG. Exploration and loot-gathering seem to be just as key in Starfield.
And there’s a lot of Starfield to explore. After creating your character, crafting their look and selecting their traits players will be ready to hop aboard their ship (also incredibly customisable) and set off for one of 1,000 unique planets — some of them colonised with vast cities with every inch of a planet explorable. My writing here doesn’t do it justice, you need to see this presentation.
Undoubtedly the most remarkable showing of the entire Xbox & Bethesda showcase, there’s a reason it was saved until last.
Starfield will launch on Xbox and PC in 2023. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
