Insomniac Games has been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. In an announcement made late on Monday, Sony announced that it had purchased the developer behind 2018’s PlayStation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man, as well as the Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series.
"We've enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception,” says Insomniac Games’ Founder and CEO Ted Price. “Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel's Spider-Man was a testament to this.”
Marvel's Spider-Man is the most successful game in Insomniac Games’ history, selling 13.2 million copies as of July 28th 2019. A commercial and critical darling, it is the latest in three generations of successful collaboration between the San Matteo-based studio and Sony.
“We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family,” says Shawn Layden. The SIE Chairman continued: “The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE [World Wide Studios] reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform."
Founded in 1994, Insomniac Games has until now been a staunchly independent studio. Outside of the PlayStation-exclusive ecosystem the developer has worked on the ill-fated FUSE with EA, and Sunset Overdrive, a cult classic Xbox One launch title published by Microsoft. However, the studio’s biggest successes have come working under the PlayStation banner.
“Joining the [World Wide Studios] family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision.” - Ted Price, CEO and Founder, Insomniac Games
What exactly that vision is going forward is yet to be revealed, but with this purchase it’s clear that Sony recognises the importance and future potential the studio possesses.
